On June 9th 1855, the Yakama reluctantly signed a treaty (which has
never been upheld by the Federal Government) with the United States
giving up approximately 17,000 square miles (or 91%) of their
territory for 1500 square miles of reservation land in the desert of
eastern Washington. The Yakama Reservation is the largest Indian
Nation in the northwest and one of the largest in the nation with
approximately 10,000 enrolled members. The area enjoys 300+ days of
sunshine a year. The annual rainfall on the reservation (8 inches)
is less than the evaporation rate. The reservation is at the foot of
snow-capped Mount Adams which is 12,307 feet tall.
SRM was established by the Pacific Northwest Presbytery of the
Presbyterian Church in America. Chris and Mary Granberry and their
children live and work on the reservation desiring to "pour
themselves out" for the glory of God and the sake of our Yakama
"neighbors".
Chris and Mary believe that when God’s people respond lovingly to
the needs of their needy and oppressed neighbors that He will make
his children like "well watered gardens" or "springs whose waters
never fail" in a "dry and sun scorched land". The Granberry family
longs to be such an "oasis" full of "the living water". They are
being used by God to bring life, hope and joy to hurting individuals
and families. Chris and his family are working to establish a
healthy, active church in the heart of the reservation, hosting
Backyard Bible Clubs with children, and evangelizing and mentoring
at-risk teenagers.
