Project Light
Project
Light teaches people to read and speak English using computers
through one-on-one relationships.
Project Light
– Roanoke
began with 2 students and 2 tutors meeting at the Roanoke public
library in July of 2007. Since then, we have continued meeting on
Tuesday and Thursday nights, and expanded to 5 students and 7
tutors. God has provided plenty of equipment and a new home at
Community Life Church. The limiting factor is tutors. Project Light
will reach the lost members of our community in proportion to the
number of tutors available so call Jerry Cotney at (334) 614-2943 .
Could I tutor?
-
If you speak
English, the answer is YES!
-
You will also need
availability on Tuesday and Thursday nights, 6:30 – 8:00.
-
If you enjoy meeting
and getting to know others, you’ll enjoy Project Light.
How else could I help?
-
If you have an old
PC, you could donate it to us and write if off on your taxes.
-
Volunteering as
support staff is also a good way to help at any time.
A Typical Class Schedule is…
6:30 –
7:00pm Reading Readiness/Zero to Five
-
Beginner students
use visual exercises to test reading skills. Reading problems
are identified.
-
More advanced
students are introduced to vocabulary, language principles, and
basic grammar.
-
Students interact
with the computer software as the tutor listens, advises, and
corrects when necessary.
7:00
– 7:30 “THE LIGHT IS COMING™”
-
The student sees
pictures, hears sounds, and responds by choosing the right
answer.
-
Basic phonics,
comprehension, writing and spelling are covered
-
Stories from the
Bible are used as reading exercises.
7:30 – 8:00
Conversation
-
Tutors & students
interact with basic vocabulary and dialogue.
-
Homework is reviewed
and assigned.
-
Bible verses are
read and discussed, etc.
